The Holden EH, produced from 1963 to 1965, is a significant model in Australian automotive history, known for its innovative design and powerful "Red" engine.
The Holden EH was introduced in August 1963 as a successor to the Holden EJ series and was produced until early 1965. It marked a pivotal moment in Holden's history, becoming one of the fastest-selling Australian cars with a total of 256,959 units built during its production run.
The EH was notable for introducing the "Red" engine, which was a significant upgrade from the previous "Grey" engine. The new engine was available in two capacities: a 149 cubic inches (95 hp) and 179 cubic inches (115 hp). This change provided a substantial increase in power and efficiency, contributing to the EH's popularity
The EH also featured a more advanced three-speed manual transmission and an optional Hydramatic automatic transmission .
Personal comment….Upon entering the motor vehicle industry as an apprentice in Canberra in the late 60’s I remember the EH with strong nostalgic emotions… especially one equipped with the powerful ‘179’ with 3 on the tree manual.
Apart from its magical good looks and efficient design this was the most powerful Holden production car ever built at the time and among the young lads of the day it was the car to dream of owning…. It was the ducks guts!
It was also ofcourse an extremely popular family car and could be seen as participating at the beginning of the powerful engine race of the time, leading to the wonderful muscle car era of the late 60’s and early 70’s.
This cars history:
1964 Holden Special 179 manual
Purchased new in1964 from Wheeler’s Holden in Bowral NSW, by a single lady who lived close by in Berrima NSW.
The car has travelled a genuine 85,475 miles equating to 137,558Kms since new.
The lady owner kept the car sheltered in her lock up garage in Berrima and had it serviced locally, driving it regularly, mostly once a week in a circle from Berrima along the old Hume highway to Mittagong then through Bowral onto Moss Vale returning to Berrima after doing her shopping.
This weekly trip totalled a distance of 41Kms. Given that this trip was driven regularly on a weekly basis it equates to a total distance of 132184 kms over 62 years …1964 until 2026.
On her passing 3 years ago the car was “gifted” by her to her next door neighbour in Berrima, a senior gent and friend who partially cared for her in her later years driving the EH to take her on her weekly shopping tour.
The car remains extremely original and unmolested, generally cars living in the Bowral / Berrima region all their lives have a reputation of being rustfree especially if always garaged.
The original paintwork (Duco) remains in excellent overall condition considering 64 years (but its not perfect) as does the original interior, seats, floor mats and trims…(please view pics).
Mechanically it remains untouched and totally original except for general replacement of ancillaries and perishables.
Original “HP” block, original engine number as per original service book that comes with the car together with owners manual, original key in wallet.
The car drives sweetly, starts immediately & is still performing extremely well, a testimony to much care and regular servicing over its 62 years.
If you can relate to most of the above and in your heart you would love to own a premium original EH HOLDEN 179 manual we have it here for you.
Call it a “time warp’ if you like !
Sitting in our prestige showroom in Bowral NSW just around the corner from where it was delivered new in 1964.
